Until the age of forty-five, Dragan had never run further than to catch a bus. Then his doctor warned him that his blood pressure was dangerously high and that he needed to change his lifestyle.

He started by walking for thirty minutes a day. After a few weeks, he began to jog short distances, and by the end of the year he had completed his first ten-kilometre race. Not only had he lost fifteen kilos, but he also slept better and felt more energetic than he had in years.

Encouraged by his progress, Dragan set himself an ambitious goal: a full marathon. Training was tough, especially during the freezing winter months, and he nearly gave up after injuring his knee. Last April, however, he crossed the finish line in four hours and twenty minutes. "Never have I been so exhausted — or so proud," he said.
