At forty, she decided to take driving lessons. At first, she hated sitting behind the wheel. She kept forgetting to check the mirrors, and she was terrified of parking. Her instructor, a patient man called Goran, suggested practising early in the morning, when the roads were empty.
After three months of lessons, Vesna failed her first test because she drove too slowly on the motorway. She didn't give up, though. Two weeks later, she passed. "I'm glad I didn't stop trying," she says. "Now I enjoy driving, and I can visit my friends whenever I want."
