Inversion & Emphasis
Formal structures: Not only did he…, Never have I…
Inversion
After negative expressions at the start of a sentence, use question word order: auxiliary + subject.
Not only did he lie, but he also stole money.
Never have I seen such a beautiful view.
Rarely do we get such an opportunity.
Emphasis (cleft sentences)
It is / was … that … and What … is … highlight the important part.
It was Maria who called, not Ana.
What I need is a long holiday.
Tip: Inversion sounds formal — it's used in writing and speeches, less in everyday conversation.
