Comparatives & Superlatives

Comparing with adjectives: bigger than, the biggest.

Short adjectives

Add -er (comparative) and the …-est (superlative). Use than with comparatives.

tall → taller → the tallest
big → bigger → the biggestdouble the last letter
happy → happier → the happiesty → i
My brother is taller than me.

Long adjectives

Adjectives with two or more syllables (except those ending in -y) take more / the most.

expensive → more expensive → the most expensive
This is the most interesting book.

Irregular forms

These need to be learned by heart.

good → better → the best
bad → worse → the worst
far → further → the furthest
Tip: Never combine them: “more bigger” ✗ → “bigger” ✓.
